Jordin coded yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. From what I can gather, he'd had heart valve replacement surgery and never woke up from it.

This was a shocker. I didn't know about the heart surgery, and I was shocked to hear he'd died. Other than the valve, Jordin was in pretty good shape.

I am still reeling. He was kind of a mentor to me in the filk community. He showed me how to deal with difficult situations with grace and dignity. He was also a gentleman, a gentle soul, and had a terrific sense of humor.

My sympathy goes out to Mary Kay Kare and to the rest of his family.

I'm not sure what I'll come up with for this. I've recently gotten pretty cynical about the whole idea of falling in love, after the emotional labor thread at Metafilter. It covered a whole lot of ground (like, near half a million words of ground) about how relationships often work, and how it's usually assumed to be the woman's job to keep track of everyone's feelings and steer those feelings in directions that make the relationship stronger. Since then, I'm not sure if I've been in a state where I wanted to feel compelled to set my own interests aside for the purpose of strengthening a relationship, even one that makes me happy.

I went looking for songlists, as I've been doing, to spark my memories. There are no song lists for "strong women in love." There are countless love song lists, and there are "female empowerment" lists (there is, apparently, basically no such thing as "male empowerment"), but nobody combines those ideas. There's a lot of love songs I like, but very few that make me "want to fall in love." Even these, I'm not sure are correct, but at least they don't carry any "nope nope nope; I am so done with that game" vibes for me.

It Must Be Love (Rickie Lee Jones) | Circles (Captain and Tennille) | Innocent Man (Billy Joel) | In a Big Country (Big Country) | Like a Prayer (Madonna) | Country Bumpkin (Loretta Lynn)

And the only one that actually brings me happy thoughts about a hypothetical relationship )

Oh wow; this is an iiiinteresting category. Lemme share some of the contents of my "DUMPSTER FIRE 2016" playlist, which is a set of songs by artists who died last year. (I have a whole playlist of songs by artists who died the year we got POTUS45. The only reason it's not longer is that some of them aren't on Spotify. In the future, I wouldn't be surprised if we blot 2016 out of calendars.)

The Heat is On | Little Red Corvette | You Want It Darker | September | Rebel Rebel | Lucky Man | Big City | Faith

2016 was a horrible year to be a celebrity. )

Somehow I appear to have missed posting last week. We've moved. (Looking at the notes for last Sunday, I'm guessing that the reason I missed posting was sheer exhaustion -- that was a busy day, and I'd done more lifting than is good for me.)

We moved into the new house on Wednesday. The movers, from Two Men And a Truck, were fast and efficient - we were out of the apartment in an hour and a half. Highly recommended.

My new phone, on the other hand, is not highly recommended. It's a great phone, except that because it was factory unlocked it doesn't support HD Voice and, hence, WiFi Calling. That's bad, because the cell signal here is rather spotty. It could be worse, except that I actually have a signal in the house, albeit a weak one at times.

I spent hours on chat with AT&T's tech support, and hours in their store, and a little while in the T-Mobile store, trying to get the damned thing recognized by the network. No dice. Now it won't even work as a WiFi hotspot, which sucks. I'll have to swap it again. I hate phones. I hate phone companies. H8 H8 H8. (Basingstoke.)

We are mostly moved in, except that our beds are in the second pod, which isn't arriving until next week. Oops. So we're still on the sofabed, which is in the living room because we didn't want to try to deal with moving it out of the bedroom. It's not merely heavy, it's huge, and won't fit vertically through a doorway.

The house is going to take some getting used to. The kitchen is lovely and open, but doesn't have as much storage as we expected -- in particular, there's only one rather narrow set of drawers. So that will take some refactoring.

The biggest problem, though, is the cats. Ticia is no longer being aggressive toward Cricket, but she's curious. Cricket, however, is terrified, and just hides. That's going to take some work -- it's not the usual case where one cat is being aggressive, so the usual procedures for reintroducing cats don't really apply.

Other than that, though, I like it here. There are a few other assorted inconveniences, but the place itself is lovely -- calm and quiet.

I think it'd be cheating if I included bands that only "broke up" because somebody died, so... no Queen, no Grateful Dead. But I'm not limiting myself to bands whose original members are all still alive, because I am at least bordering on "old," and most of the bands I loved are missing at least one original member. (And because I went looking for lists of "great bands that broke up" because I don't keep track of these things, and I've never heard of most of the bands on the lists.) However, I think it'd be extra-cheating to list anything by the Beatles because I can't honestly say I wish they were together as they are know; I've seen too many zombie AU fanfics already.

Also I went looking for the details about several bands I thought had broken up and discovered that many of them had gotten back together in some way, and several of them are still recording. (Supertramp is still active. Huh.)

White Rabbit | Gimme Gimme Gimme | Vacation | Peaceful Easy Feeling | Come Dancing | Anarchy in the UK

One of the few bands I've seen in concert - well, I've seen the abridged version of the band. )

Ooh, that's a bold claim. Hrm. I am tempted to rattle off half the songs on the "Firestorm" album, on the grounds that everyone should know some survivalist teaching songs. I'm also trying to remember songs I dragged out for my kids and said, "you will listen to this; it is important to your education and understanding the culture of your people and I am not raising antisocial numb-witted jerks here, so you are going to hear this song and whether or not you like it, you are going to damn well be ENRICHED by it."

There aren't actually a lot of those. And most of them are at least somewhat in the filk genre.

Old Time Religion (the filk version) | Little Fuzzy Animals | Velveteen | Badger Badger Badger Badger | Black Powder and Alcohol | Cranes over Hiroshima

I really wanted Black Powder to be the video, but then I remembered this one. )

Sigh; I'm behind again. Yesterday at noon, my internet died. Called AT&T. Got told they can't figure anything out; they'll send a technician Saturday. (They offered for today but I wouldn't be home at the only timeslot they had.) At about 7:30 pm, internet started working again - we suspect the router had overheated. If a similar thing happens today, I'll call them to cancel the techie visit.

That threw off my working schedule and I didn't get back to post here. Which is fine, because after a day of fighting with tech I wasn't up to sorting out the intended meaning of "song that moves you forward"... what, like a sea shanty that helps you row? Erm, probably not.

Here, have some songs from my "UFYH" playlist:

Shock Treatment | No New Tale to Tell | Make a Circuit with Me | Kyrie | March of Cambreadh | Psych (Theme from Psych) | Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades | Invincible | Rapper's Delight | Love Somebody

A terrific clean-the-house song )

The hard part here is picking songs that I haven't already mentioned. These include songs that are pinned to several memories, songs where I interpret the content multiple ways, and songs where the filk of them always overlaps the original in my head. Basically, any song where someone might ask, "what does that mean to you?" and I'd have to answer, "it's complicated."

Uncle John's Band | Breakin' Out | It Must Be Love | No Myth | Star | Norwegian Wood | Knights in White Satin | Woodstock | The Joker | King of Pain | Mercedes Benz

And one that had multiple meanings before I saw the fanvid )

The hope is, I'll do one now (morning) and one later today (evening) and be caught up. I looked at this one yesterday, and was too baffled to post.

A song that makes you think about... life. As opposed to, a song that makes me think about death? About non-existence? About the weather, which I suppose is not specifically about life? Bah. I suppose it means life in the abstract, life as a meta-concept, rather than aspects of life like relationships, which would exclude most love songs.

The Circle Game | Imagine | American Pie | The Sign | None of Your Business | Hard Knock Life | I've Never Been to Me | Live Like You Were Dying | Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall | Lights

The actual first song that came to mind when I saw the topic )

This is for yesterday - I went out in the early evening, thinking I'd be home in time to post, but nope; I got home at 11:45. And I think I'd rather make separate posts than combine two in one.

This one is somewhat problematic - it's a fine category for a song list, but it involves revealing personal info. (I am not overly-concerned with people knowing what year I was born in.) It reminds me of a bit from Cory Doctorow's Little Brother:
But the quiz that had taken over the blogs of the Xnet that night was what scared me, because it was anything but harmless:
  • What's your sex
  • What grade are you in?
  • What school do you go to?
  • Where in the city do you live?
...There were only two people in my whole school who matched that profile. Most schools it would be the same. If you wanted to figure out who the Xnetters were, you could use these quizzes to find them all.
So when I see fun/casual quizzes with questions that include "plz offer up some useful individual demographic info," I give it the solid side-eye.

... And then I usually do the quiz, because I really don't believe this one's being distributed to gather age info about people who like Journey songs. And at least a handful of songs from the year I was born

Sugar, Sugar | Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In | Sweet Caroline | Touch Me | Come Together | Hair | A Boy Named Sue | Helplessly Hoping

Ahahahahaha haahahah haha ahahaahahaha NO.

I have never done karaoke, and if I were to start, I don't imagine it'd be with a duet. I wouldn't want to sing with someone who's as mediocre as me, so I'd be cringing through both parts, and I wouldn't want to sing with someone who's actually good so that I was sharply aware how much everyone else (including my partner) was cringing during my parts. So this becomes a damn near impossible question to answer.

Imma go with "Duets I like," because once we drag in the "karaoke" aspect, I have all the NOPE.

WTF is a "classic?" Arg, and wtf is a "classic favorite?" A classic that's a favorite of mine? A classic that's a favorite of many people? A favorite of many people that's so common people call it classically favorite?

Is this where I bust out the internet memes and post Badger Badger Mushroom Snake?

I hate questionnaires with undefined terms. I get that, in this case at least, I get to make it up - there's no wrong answers; it's whatever I think is a "classic favorite." But that's even less useful than "a song that's high energy" or "a song that's awesome," both of which are wide open for personal interpretation. "Classic" implies some kind of external judgment going on; "favorite" is very much subjective, but the phrasing makes it unclear if what's wanted is one of my favorites, or one that's shared by a lot of other people.

HERE HAVE SOME THINGS THAT COME TO MIND WHEN I HEAR THE PHRASE "CLASSIC FAVORITE" AND DON'T TRY TO THINK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS:

Happy Together | Hey Jude | I Walk the Line | Shout | 1999 | Get Together | Ziggy Stardust | Somebody to Love | Touch of Grey | Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)

And one that's shifted from a common favorite to a political marching song )

Am I really halfway done? Wow. I'm not sure I've ever posted for 15 days in a row before. Certainly, never on a themed topic. Hrm, cover songs... that means I have to list the artist, not just the song name. I mostly prefer originals, but occasionally there's a cover I really like. I'm restricting myself to songs where I know the original (or at least, an earlier) version. And liking these doesn't mean I necessarily like them best; I'm glad the meme isn't "a cover song you like better than the original" because then I'd be forced to poke through the list of songs I didn't know were covers until I looked up details about them online.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Marilyn Manson | Don't Let It Bring You Down - Annie Lennox |
Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin | I Fought the Law - The Clash | Baby Got Back – Jonathan Coulton | Hazy Shade of Winter - The Bangles

Last year's political season brought me my two favorite cover songs ever. )
